The Yankees are looking for some lineup help.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today in a report from May 25, the Yankees are “aggressively searching for a right-handed bat, preferably a third baseman, while also looking for another starter.”
Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera broke his ankle in mid-May, and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who played third base last season, has been on the injured list since May 2 with a right oblique strain. He’s expected to return in the first week of June.
The Yankees’ depth has been tested — and largely failed. Third-base fill-ins Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas are hitting under .200.
Second baseman DJ LeMahieu, who also has experience at third base, continues to struggle at the plate, with a .233 average in 33 plate appearances.
As constructed, the Yankees’ lineup has four right-handed regulars: Aaron Judge, Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Volpe and LeMahieu, with Jasson Dominguez a switch hitter.
The Yankees are also awaiting the return of righty slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who has been out all season with injuries to both elbows. He’s expected to begin a rehab assignment soon.
The Yankees’ rotation has held up — 3.41 ERA — despite injuries to Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil and Marcus Stroman. But it’s currently utilizing Will Warren in his first full season and Ryan Yarbrough, who began the year as a reliever and had not started in the majors since 2023.
The Yankees are currently in first place in the American League East with a 33-20 record.
This year’s trade deadline is July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
