See huge I-80 sinkhole minutes after it opened in chilling new video

Newly obtained video recorded by a New Jersey State Police trooper’s body camera shows the moments soon after a massive I-80 sinkhole in Morris County opened up in December.

The video footage was obtained by abc7, which filed a request under the state’s Open Public Records Act.

The giant sinkhole opened up Dec. 26. It was filled in and repaired, but two additional I-80 sinkholes opened up in February and March.

The highway’s westbound lanes have been closed at Exit 34 in Wharton since March 19, when the third sinkhole opened on the median next to the westbound lanes.

The repairs are taking longer than initially projected, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. State officials said in late April that the lanes will be reopened at the end of May.

The closed section of I-80 in Wharton, between Exit 34 and Route 15, remains a source of frustration for borough residents and businesses affected by detoured traffic.
