President Donald Trump’s approval rating ticked up following his Middle East trip last week, a new poll showed.
The latest Morning Consult poll showed 48% of voters approving of Trump’s job performance—his highest approval rating Morning Consult has recorded since mid-March. The poll showed that half of the voters still disapproved of Trump’s job performance, but that dropped two percentage points since last week.
According to the poll, Trump’s approval ratings on foreign policy and his handling of trade also improved. This comes after he walked back most of his tariffs shortly after imposing them last month.
The poll found that voters are “evenly divided over Trump’s handling of trade.” Morning Consult noted that this is a “significant improvement from earlier this month, when they were 7 percentage points more likely to disapprove than approve.”
The poll found that Trump’s strongest policy area continues to be immigration, where 53% of voters approve of his handling of it. He continued to receive low marks on the economy, with 47% of voters disapproving of how he is handling it.
Morning Consult’s Eli Yokley also explained that last week, Trump also received his “best news week” since February.
“We just clocked @realDonaldTrump‘s best approval rating since mid-March in our weekly tracking surveys. It was also his best news week since late February by our buzz metric,” he wrote on social media platform X.
The latest poll was conducted May 16-19 among 2,208 registered U.S. voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
Other polls show that Trump’s approval ratings could be improving in recent weeks since he walked back his unpopular tariff policy.
The latest Harvard CAPS/Harris poll showed that 46% approved of how Trump is handling the economy, which is up from the 43% who said the same last month. Another 43% said they approved of how Trump is dealing with inflation, which is up two percentage points from last month.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, released Tuesday, found Trump’s approval rating ticked up two percentage points since the poll was conducted late last month. The poll found that 44% of respondents said they approved of Trump’s job performance, while 52% say they disapproved.
Another poll, sponsored by a conservative media outlet, showed improvement in Trump’s approval rating earlier this month. The Quantus Insights poll showed a virtual tie, with 48.2% of respondents saying they approve of Trump while 48.3% said they disapprove.
To be clear, his approval rating still remains historically low when compared to other presidents at the beginning of their terms. According to Reuters, former President Joe Biden had a 55% approval rating at a similar point in his presidency.
