An 83-year-old woman on an electric mobility scooter was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday night as she was crossing a section of Route 27 in Edison, officials said.

Yuan Ding was hit at about 8:50 p.m. near the corner of Sheppard Place in the southern section of the township, Edison police said.

Ding died of her injuries at an area hospital less than an hour later.

The driver, a 57-year-old Edison man, stopped at the scene, police said.

Police said the rain and poor lighting made it difficult for the driver to see the victim on the four-lane highway. He is not expected to be charged.
