A New Jersey man wanted for manslaughter in Essex County was arrested at the Canadian border Monday near Buffalo, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.

Malakai McRay, 22, of Newark was charged on Monday with second-degree counts of manslaughter and weapons offenses, court records show.

McRay was wanted in connection with the death of Yasir Mackenson on May 16, a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.

Authorities at the Port of Buffalo, Rainbow Bridge border crossing discovered McRay on a commercial bus trying to cross the border into the United States, officials said.

Authorities discovered McRay had an active warrant out of Essex County for his arrest, officials said.

McRay was turned over to New York State Police and is currently in custody with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office awaiting extradition to New Jersey, officials said.

No further details on the incident were shared by authorities Tuesday, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing, officials said.

McRay did not have an attorney listed in court records.
