A man died Sunday after attempting to rescue two kayakers who fell into a Poconos lake, according to authorities.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police responded to a long-term rental property on Sir Bradford Road in Pocono Lake at 12:26 p.m. Sunday for a report of individuals in the water, according to a press release sent to NJ Advance Media.

Officials said about 20 people were staying at the rental, which is located on a private lake.

According to police, two adults wearing life vests were in a kayak on the lake Sunday when windy conditions caused them to flip over and they fell into the water.

Bibin Michael, 40, of Norwood, dove in to save the kayakers, who were trying to hold onto the boat and make it back to shore, officials said.

But halfway between the shoreline and the kayak, Michael disappeared under the water and did not resurface, according to the press release.

Michael was the only one confirmed to still be in the water at the time of the call. A police officer with dive experience responded and recovered his body.

The coroner’s office pronounced Michael deceased from accidental drowning, officials said.
