If you’re planning on flying the friendly skies anytime soon, you might want to familiarize yourself with what can and cannot be packed into your checked luggage.
The Transportation Security Agency, or TSA for short, has been notorious for banning several items from checked luggage in the interest of safety.
But there is one item in particular that TSA officers are cracking down on more recently.
The TSA stresses that travelers cannot pack lithium ion batteries, including power banks, in checked luggage at all, and there are limits to how many and what type they can pack in carry-on luggage.
Here’s what you need to know about the TSA regulations regarding lithium ion batteries.
Can I bring my lithium ion battery in my checked luggage?
Travelers cannot place lithium ion and lithium metal batteries in checked luggage, according to the TSA.
This includes power banks and cell phone battery charging cases as well as larger aftermarket extended-life laptop computer batteries and some larger batteries for professional audio/visual equipment.
Can I bring my lithium ion battery in my carry-on?
According to the TSA, you can carry up to two spare lithium batteries in your carry-on luggage. This includes larger sizes between 101–160 Wh for ion batteries and 2-8 grams for metal batteries.
However, these batteries must be clearly labeled to show Wh rating. Also, carrying more than two of these batteries can result in additional screening at the checkpoint or confiscation.
