A former Morristown High School student carried a gun in his satchel when he returned to his alma mater earlier this month, officials announced Wednesday.
The former student was first seen on May 8 entering a home on Clyde Potts Drive, where he removed what appeared to be a two-tone handgun from his waistband before concealing it in a green tote bag as he left the building, according to a statement from Morristown Mayor Timothy Dougherty.
He was not identified in the statement.
On a different day the same person entered Morristown High School in an attempt to obtain his academic transcripts, Dougherty said.
While on campus, the School Resource Officer Christopher Little recognized the former student from a safety memo that had been distributed to law enforcement and detained him, the mayor said.
Little placed him in handcuffs and shortly thereafter, county detectives responded and confirmed there was an active warrant, and placed him under arrest, officials said.
Detectives found a two-tone Smith & Wesson handgun in the former student’s satchel, Dougherty said. The defaced firearm had a loaded magazine but there was no round in the chamber.
The mayor did not say if the former student was facing any charges specific to the incident.
He thanked Little for his “vigilance and professionalism.”
The high school’s superintendent could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday evening.
