The driver who died after being shot and crashing his car Saturday night in Cumberland County was identified by family members as a 17-year-old high school student.
Lucas DeGeorge was a junior at Buena Regional High School in Atlantic County, his grandmother, Elizabeth Lawler, told NJ Advance Media on Monday evening.
Lawler said the family was grieving DeGeorge’s death and had no further comment.
Nobody at Buena Regional High School could immediately be reached for comment.
Police were called to the 900 block of Church Street in Millville on Saturday night for a report of a car crash, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office.
They learned that the driver had been shot and “subsequently crashed his vehicle,” the office said.
DeGeorge was taken to Inspira Medical Center Vineland, where he was pronounced dead around 10 p.m., the office said.
Investigators have not said if DeGeorge was shot while driving, or if he was wounded earlier.
A GoFundMe was created by his family and as of 7 p.m. Monday it had reached over $6,600 of its $10,000 goal.
“He loved his family immensely,” the GoFundMe read. “He was an amazing son, brother, nephew, grandson and friend. His parents and siblings are left with unimaginable pain and voids. He had his whole life ahead of him, and losing him so suddenly has left us devastated.”
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Millville Police Detective Robert Vit at 856-825-7010 or prosecutor’s office Detective William Parker at 856-453-0486.
