Boys Tennis Top 20 for Friday, May 23: Fine tuning as playoffs rage on

The playoffs have begun, and number of the top teams were already in action.

Match play will only get more intense as the rounds go on with head-to-head matches between the best of the best.

With that said, check out the latest NJ.com Top 20 rankings below, and be sure to have a look at the Group and Conference rankings as well later today.

Rankings are based off results reported to njschoolsports.com through Thursday, May 22.

1-West Windsor-Plainsboro South (20-0)

  • Last week: No. 1
  • West Windsor-Plainsboro South won the Blue Devil Invitational last weekend. The Pirates defeated Watchung Hills in the first round, 5-0, and then Ridge in the final, 3-2. WWPS earned wins at second and third singles and second doubles against the Red Devils. WWPS also beat Lawrence in regular season action to move to 20-0. The Pirates are the top seed in the Central Jersey, Group 3 state tournament.

2-Newark Academy (18-0)

  • Last week: No. 2
  • Newark Academy added a 5-0 win over Columbia on Monday. Second singles Neev Rana moved up to the top spot and upset Vaughn Lee. The Minutemen were able to get a couple other reserves some experience in the match. NA had a match with Millburn postponed on Thursday, but it gets its North, Non-Public tournament journey started next week against St. Peter’s Prep.

3-Pingry (12-1)

  • Last week: No. 3
  • Pingry captured its fourth-straight Prep A Tournament crown last weekend. Pingry had finalists at all five flights and won four of them from second singles down. The Big Blue then played their first match since May 1 when they defeated Westfield on the road on Tuesday, 4-1. Pingry will face Seton Hall Prep in the quarterfinals of the North, Non-Public tournament.

4-Ridgewood (11-0)

  • Last week: No. 4
  • Ridgewood claimed the Bergen County Tournament title this past weekend with 14 points. Ridgewood won three flights at first singles, first doubles and second doubles. The Maroons are the top seed in the North 1, Group 4 tournament.

5-Delbarton (20-4)

  • Last week: No. 6
  • Delbarton won the Morris County Tournament for the ninth-straight time this past weekend. The Green Wave needed to sweep all three singles flights and they did just that. Delbarton also downed Westfield and Watchung Hills, 4-1, earlier in the week. Delbarton next gets Dwight-Englewood in the quarterfinals of the North, Non-Public tournament.

6-Ridge (10-6)

  • Last week: No. 8
  • Ridge returned to action on the clay courts of the Westfield Tennis Club at the Blue Devil Invitational. Ridge defeated Westfield in the opening round, 3-2, before falling to West Windsor-Plainsboro South in the final by the same score. Ridge also won 4-1 at Livingston on Monday before beating Red Bank Regional, 5-0 indoors in the first round of the North 2, Group 3 tournament.

7-Princeton (7-2)

  • Last week: No. 7
  • Princeton has only played four matches -- all on the road -- in the month of May. It didn’t play any matches in the past week, and so it’ll be a tad rusty going into the Central, Group 3 tournament as the top seed. Princeton’s last match and win came on May 12 at Princeton Day

8-Chatham (14-2)

  • Last week: No. 5
  • Chatham placed second at the Morris County Tournament this past weekend. The Cougars finished just one point behind Delbarton. Chatham won both doubles flights and had a finalist at first singles.

9-South Brunswick (9-2)

  • Last week: No. 9
  • Playing in its first match since April 29 and any competition since May 1 (GMC Tournament), South Brunswick edged rival East Brunswick on Monday. The Vikings won 3-2 on two tiebreaker wins at first doubles and second singles. The Vikings also cruised at third singles.

10-Montgomery (9-5)

  • Last week: No. 10
  • Montgomery got revenge and took down Hillsborough on the road on Tuesday, 3-2. Montgomery won despite missing three starters and having to adjust the lineup accordingly. The Cougars then defeated Hunterdon Central in the first round of the Central, Group 4 state tournament.

11-Montclair Kimberley (16-7)

  • Last week: No. 14
  • Montclair Kimberley spit a pair of 3-2 matches with Millburn on Monday and Tuesday of this week. The Cougars nearly won the first battle, but second doubles went to Millburn in a tiebreaker. MKA won two out of the three matches will the Millers on the year. MKA next faces Bergen Catholic in the quarters of the North, Non-Public tournament.

12-Millburn (14-4)

  • Last week: No. 11
  • Millburn split a pair of regular season matchups on back-to-back days with Montclair Kimberley. Both of the matches were 3-2. Millburn had its full lineup in the first encounter where it won at first singles and first doubles and second doubles (tiebreaker). The Millers then cruised past an overmatched North Plainfield team in the first round of the North 2, Group 3 tournament.

13-East Brunswick (9-5)

  • Last week: No. 13
  • East Brunswick lost a tough match to South Brusnwick, 3-2 on Monday. East Brunswick fell in two 10-point tiebreakers, though Andrew Cui at first singles got some mini payback against Manav Kumar. The Bears also downed North Brunswick in the first round of the Central, Group 4 state tournament.

14-West Windsor-Plainsboro North (9-3)

  • Last week: No. 12
  • West Windsor-Plainsboro North was idle this past week, though it does take a six-match winning streak into the playoffs. WWPN will get its Central, Group 3 tournament run going against Jackson Memorial.

15-Westfield (13-5)

  • Last week: No. 15
  • Westfield lost hard-fought matches to Ridge (3-2), Delbarton (4-1) and Pingry (4-1) this week. It also defeated Watchung Hills, 5-0. The healthier Blue Devils are the top seed in the North 2, Group 4 bracket.

16-Bergen Catholic (16-1)

  • Last week: No. 17
  • Bergen Catholic took place at the Bergen County Tournament this past weekend. The Crusaders’s Leo Park won at third singles and had finalists at first doubles. Bergen Catholic also defeated Seton Hall Prep on the road on Monday before knocking off Pope John in the North, Non-Public first round a day later. BC gets Montclair Kimberley away in the quarterfinals.

17-Tenafly (12-0)

  • Last week: No. No. 18
  • Tenafly won a key divisional matchup against Pascack Valley, 5-0 on Tuesday. Tenafly also took fourth place in the competitive Bergen County Tournament over the weekend where it had nine points. Zach Chizzik reach the third singles final. The Tigers are the top seed in North 1, Group 3.

18-Christian Brothers (17-3)

  • Last week: No. 16
  • Christian Brothers didn’t play any matches this week, and it didn’t participate in the Monmouth County Tournament either over the weekend. CBA gets its state tournament going next week as the South, Non-Public bracket’s top seed.

19-Marlboro (12-1)

  • Last week: No. 19
  • Marlboro claimed its second Monmouth County Tournament title in a row this past weekend. Marlboro tallied 24 points and captured three individual titles at first singles, first doubles and third doubles which was unique for the event. The Mustangs get Monroe in the quarters of the Central, Group 4 state tournament.

20-Dwight-Englewood (15-4)

  • Last week: No. 20
  • Dwight-Englewood won two matches earlier this week. D-E downed Leonia on the road, 4-1 in divisional play, and then it defeated Saddle River Day, 5-0 in the first round of the North, Non-Public state tournament. The Bulldogs also placed second by just one point at the Bergen County Tournament. D-E faces Delbarton in the quarterfinals states.
